TRW Steering Box and Throttle Body Checklist: Symptoms, Adjustment Screw, and Timing Belt Facts

Find the ID plate or stamped number on the housing. Write down the part number, casting date, and any letters around the lube fitting. If the tag is gone, measure the box before ordering: input shaft spline count, sector shaft spline count, bolt spacing, and the length between the pitman arm center and the lower mounting hole. A photo from an online catalog that matches a vehicle is not a part number.

Step 2: Inspect the TRW Steering Gear Adjustment Screw Before Turning It

The small screw with a locknut on the side of the steering box is usually called the steering gear adjustment screw. On a TRW steering box, it controls the mesh between the sector shaft and the worm gear. It is not a normal bolt. Before you order a new throttle body, check for unmetered air. On a Subaru WRX throttle body, the intake hose and gasket can leak and mimic the exact same symptoms. A smoke test is faster and cheaper than a new part.

Step 4: Match the WRX Throttle Body to the Generation, Not to the Connector

The WRX has been sold with both cable-operated and drive-by-wire throttle bodies across its generations. They look similar at a glance, but the sensor configuration, idle air control, and mounting patterns are not interchangeable. A unit from one engine family will not operate correctly on another without the matching ECU and harness.

If someone says “just get the one that fits,” ask for the throttle body part number off the original. Compare at least three numbers: the casting number, the connector part number, and the sensor part number. I learned this the hard way when a look-alike unit had the right connector but the wrong throttle position sensor curve.

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure why some throttle body rebuilders use all-new sensor internals while others reset the sensor and call it rebuilt. My best guess is it comes down to core availability. That is exactly why I ask for the rebuild details in writing.

Step 5: Ask “What Happens If Timing Belt Breaks While Driving” Before It Answers Itself

The question a lot of owners forget to ask is “what happens if timing belt breaks while driving?” It depends on a detail that is usually printed in the service manual: whether the engine is an interference design. If it is, the pistons and valves can occupy the same space during a belt failure. The engine usually stops immediately, and the repair can mean bent valves, damaged pistons, and sometimes a complete replacement cylinder head.

On an interference engine, a broken timing belt is not a “tow it home and replace the belt” event. It is an engine failure event.

From a cost-control perspective, this is the easiest calculation in procurement: a quality timing belt kit, with a water pump and idlers, is usually a few hundred dollars. A broken belt on an interference engine can easily be thousands. I have seen an invoice where the cheapest option was a used lower-mileage engine. That is a $350 belt replacement gone very wrong.

Granted, remanufactured parts can be a smart value, and I do not recommend paying a premium just to feel like you bought premium. But I also do not recommend choosing the cheapest part when the second visit will be your expense, not the part supplier's. When the customer's car comes back, they are not thinking about the part brand. They are thinking that your shop did not fix it right. The part quality is the last handshake you have with that customer.

Common Mistakes That Make These Repairs More Expensive

  • Using the steering gear adjustment screw to mask wear. Over-tightening causes notchy steering and can pull the seal into the shaft.
  • Ordering a TRW steering box without the tag. It's like ordering a shirt without knowing the size.
  • Cleaning the WRX throttle body but leaving a cracked intake hose. The code will come back, and so will the customer.
  • Replacing a timing belt without the tensioner and idlers. The belt may survive, but the idler may not.
