TRW Ceramic Brake Pads, Power Steering Pump Specs, and More: How to Order the Right Part the First Time

Most buyers focus on the brand and the price and completely miss whether the kit has the clips. Then old clips get reused, and you’re chasing a rattle that a $5 hardware kit would have prevented.

In Q2 of 2023, I skipped the hardware check on a set of pads to save time. The resulting vibration complaint cost us a second disassembly and about $220 in labor. Scenario B: You need a power steering pump

Scenario C: Special tools and odd-ball parts

Now for the orders that seem simple but aren’t.

Ford headlight adjustment tool

If the headlight adjuster screw is in a weird spot, a flathead doesn’t always work. Ford has used plastic gears and Torx-style receivers on different models, and a universal tool can strip the gear. A dedicated Ford headlight adjustment tool is cheap, but only if you get the right type. Check whether your model needs the insert type or the socket type before ordering.

The cylinder is often stamped with a size code: standard, 0.25 oversize, 0.50 oversize. If you only give the seller the VIN, you can get a kit that’s correct for the model but wrong for the cylinder that’s currently in the engine.

Check what’s in the kit too. Some include rings, wrist pin, and circlips; others are just the piston. I learned that the hard way when a “piston kit” I ordered turned out to be a bare piston, adding a two-day delay.

Bottom line: there’s no universal answer for every part order. But there is a process that prevents most mistakes. If that seems like a lot, it isn’t—you’re gonna spend more time undoing a bad order than you ever would checking the old part. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.
