I am not the person you want next to a piston press. I know what the machine does, and I’ve watched our machinists use it plenty. But I work on the other side of the shop. I handle the office part of procurement for a 25-person automotive machine shop and parts supplier—roughly $600,000 a year in orders across eight vendors. I report to both operations and finance, which means I get asked about cost, timing, and why a return label exists. That question came up more than I’d like before I changed how I buy TRW parts.
When I took over purchasing in 2021, TRW was one of our engine part lines. The supplier’s catalog was just a link on my bookmarks bar. I typed in what the machinist wrote on the work order, picked a result, and moved on. Last October, that approach finally backfired.
The TRW pistons catalog is not a photo gallery
A customer dropped off a 350 GM engine for a rebuild. The work order said “350, standard bore.” I did what I had always done: opened the TRW pistons catalog, searched for standard bore, and found a piston that looked right. It had valve reliefs and ring grooves. In the thumbnail photo, it looked like every other piston in that category. I placed the order.
Even after I hit confirm, I kept second-guessing. What if I had missed a dimension? The two-day wait was tense. When the box arrived, the machinist opened it, looked at the crown, and said: “This isn’t the right valve relief for the heads we’re using.” Then he put the piston back in the box.
That was the day I learned the TRW pistons catalog is not a photo gallery. It is a technical reference. One engine family can have several piston variations within the same bore size. A picture does not tell you enough.
The TRW app made me face the blanks
I had the TRW app on my phone for months before this. I didn’t use it much because it asked for information I didn’t know. That sounds silly now. It is exactly what a buyer should want.
The TRW app is not magic. It doesn’t look at the customer’s cylinder head and tell me which piston to order. But it does make me answer application questions before it gives me a part number. I still don’t love extra fields when I am in a hurry. Part of me wants a simple search box. Another part knows the simple search box is how I ordered the wrong piston. I will take the friction.
The shock absorber diagram that prevented another return
A few days later, a customer called about a rear shock that would not line up with the mounting hole. He wanted to send it back and try a different brand. Before I approved a return, I asked for the part number and looked up an original shock absorber diagram.
The diagram made it obvious. The original lower eyelet had an offset that the replacement did not. They shared the same overall length, but the wrong offset meant it could never align correctly. That wasn’t a defective shock. It was a wrong spec. If I had not looked at the drawing, I would have ordered the same thing again.
What a Polaris Ranger question taught me about best
The next week, a caller asked for “the best turn signal kit for Polaris Ranger.” We don’t normally handle UTV accessories, but the question stayed with me. I asked whether the Ranger was an 800 or 1000 and whether it already had factory turn signals. The caller paused and said, “Does that matter?”
It does. “Best” is not a product specification. It sounds like one, but it only works after you know the vehicle, the trim, and the existing wiring. I saw the same pattern in my piston order: I had a description, not enough data to identify the actual part.
I would rather spend ten minutes asking those questions than two days waiting on a wrong part. An informed customer usually answers with a part number or a better question, and that saves everyone.
What I do differently now
Now, before I order any TRW engine part, I open the TRW app or catalog and treat the part number as the destination, not the search term. I ask the customer or machinist for the engine code, cylinder head style, and any machining notes. If the answer is “I don’t know,” we slow down and find out instead of gambling.
I still don’t run a piston press. That will never change. But by the time a piston sits next to that press, the correct part number has been checked against the application detail. The machinist can do the skilled part, and I can do the paperwork part without wincing. That may not sound like a big deal, but in a 25-person shop, it saves money, time, and a couple of uncomfortable conversations.
If you buy parts for a living, don’t be afraid to ask “which exact version?” A part might look right, but “right” is not a spec.
