If you're reaching for the adjuster screw on a TRW steering box because the wheel feels loose, stop and check the other symptoms first. If you're working on a different design—a rack-and-pinion unit, or a hydraulic-assist box with a separate valve housing—the steps are different. Low fluid level can mimic loose steering. Worn tie rod ends can too. Rule that out first.

One more thing: if you're not comfortable taking torque measurements in inch-pounds, find someone who is. A box over-tightened by even 20% will fail early, and that headache makes the original problem look minor.

Bottom line: TRW steering box adjustment is a legitimate fix when the box is healthy and mildly out of spec. It's the right call in maybe 60% of the cases I see. The other 40% are parts orders waiting to happen. Check for leaks. Check for clunks. Check the free play. If it's just play and it's smooth, adjust it and move on.
