Friday, 3:47 PM. A fleet customer calls: two trucks need brakes before Monday. Then they ask what an alternator replacement costs on the third truck. And someone in the shop is staring at a radiator fan wiring diagram that doesn’t match anything under the hood. In my line of work—coordinating rush jobs for automotive parts—this is a normal afternoon.
This isn’t a guide from a marketing department. It’s the notes I keep next to the shop computer. Every one of those questions can wait except the brakes, but I’ve learned that the smaller questions are often the ones that cost customers the most. TRW used to be an independent safety systems supplier. Since 2015, it’s part of ZF Aftermarket. The old supplier code doesn’t matter much anymore; what matters is the part number from the current ZF catalog. I’ve had customers ask for “the real TRW” as if it disappeared. It didn’t. The catalog system changed, and the testing requirements got stricter. That’s a good thing for a repair shop, because it means the part in the box is more likely to match the engineering data behind it.
2. Are TRW Pro brake pads actually good, or just another aftermarket line?
“Pro” in the name makes everyone suspicious. I was too. In 2023, we tested three aftermarket pad brands on the same European sedan—same rotors, same test route, same driver. The TRW Pro set was the only one that matched the OE pedal feel from cold. The others stopped fine, but one needed heat in the pad before it felt normal. Let me rephrase that: if you only replace the alternator without testing the battery, you might be back in a month. A compact car might land near the low end, while a European V6 can push well past the high end. Get a local quote too—prices vary by vehicle and region.
6. What does a Molekule air filter have to do with car parts?
Honestly? Nothing. My search log keeps showing “Molekule air filter” alongside TRW part numbers. Molekule makes home air purifiers; it’s not an automotive brand we sell. But the underlying question is still valid: what should you do about air quality in a car? If you’re replacing brake pads, the visible dust on the wheels is a clue—brake dust is airborne and it’s mostly metal particles from the rotor and pad. If dust matters to your customer, ask your parts supplier for a low-dust pad formulation; TRW Pro’s catalog includes options for many applications. That, plus a good cabin air filter, is the real conversation to have. Just don’t mount a house purifier on the dash.
7. TRW Pro brake pads or genuine OEM parts?
I have mixed feelings about aftermarket versus genuine. On one hand, the box with the dealer logo isn’t magic. On the other, some vehicles are genuinely sensitive to small differences in friction material. If the OEM pad was made by TRW, you’re often holding the same pad in different packaging—but not always. OEMs can specify different coatings or compounds. The safe move is to compare the OE part number to the TRW Pro number. In March 2024, 36 hours before a fleet deadline, the dealer said OEM pads would take six days. The local warehouse had the TRW Pro set with the matching part number and coating. We used those, the fleet left on time, and the customer never knew the difference. Does that make aftermarket better? No. It makes verification better.
