The Email That Started It

Last September, on a Tuesday morning, I got an email from a customer we had never worked with. The subject line was 'Parts Inquiry'. The message was short. Then, the next morning, the customer added, 'Oh, mine has a Vito's big bore kit.' (Note to self: always ask about existing modifications before sourcing engine parts.) The correct big bore piston was $65 more, and it had to be matched to the cylinder bore. One missing modifier turned a simple part request into a two-day back and forth. It also reminded me that 'almost enough' information is the most expensive kind.

2010 Chrysler Sebring Alternator

The 2010 Chrysler Sebring alternator was the most straightforward line. At least it had a year, a make, and a model. I pulled three quotes from suppliers in November 2024. They came in at $84.50 for a remanufactured unit, $123.00 for a new aftermarket unit, and $209.00 for a factory replacement. The factory replacement carried a $35 core charge, refundable when the old alternator was returned.

I have mixed feelings about reman alternators. On one hand, they are cheap and easy to find. On the other hand, I have lost count of the reman units that only got a new brush pack and a coat of paint. The real cost of an alternator is not the purchase price. It is the total cost of the job: the replacement labor, the car rental, the second tow if it fails, and the core charge you lose if the old core gets damaged. What Does a Welded Differential Do?

It took me a full minute to realize that a welded differential is not a part. It is a modification. Someone opens the housing, welds the spider gears together, and turns the differential into a spool. With a spool, both rear wheels rotate at the same speed at all times.

I am not an engineer, so I can't give you the exact stress calculations. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is the cost side. Welding is cheap. A local shop might charge $50 or $100 if the differential is already out of the car. A proper locker or limited slip differential can cost $400 to $1,000 or more before installation. That makes welding look great.

But the total cost of a welded differential is not just the labor. It includes tire wear, parking-lot chirping, stress on axle shafts, and the risk of breaking parts at the worst possible moment. For a dedicated drift car or off-road toy, a welded diff can be fine. For a daily driver, it is usually a bad idea. The customer who asked that question had a drift event coming up and wanted the cheapest way to lock his rear axle. The Aftermath

The order itself was not huge. Total parts came to about $1,100, plus our small sourcing fee. We did not make a fortune. But we learned a lot about where our quote process was leaking time.

It is not a huge digital overhaul. It is a line of text that we paste into every inquiry reply. That small change cut our average sourcing turnaround from five days to two days.

I do not want to sound like the customer was clueless. He was not. He was asking the right questions, just in the wrong order.
